FRINGE MILANO OFF

FRINGE MILANO OFF FESTIVAL
October 2 > 12
62 shows with 244 performances

From Thursday, October 2 to Sunday, October 5 and from Thursday, October 9 to Sunday, October 12, the Fringe section of Milano Off will feature 2 to 3 performances per day in all participating venues, in a continuous flow of shows starting in the afternoon and running into late evening

This year, the theatre performances in the Fringe section of the Festival will be presented in multiple languages, as international artists have also responded to the call. The concept of the Festival is a journey, and journey means internationality.

The participating productions were selected by a panel composed of all the venue managers involved in the festival and by an artistic committee, based on various multidisciplinary artistic categories:

  • Theatre (Contemporary Drama, Dramedy, Comedy, Classics)
  • Monologues and Stand-Up
  • “Off” Fringe Musicals
  • Physical Theatre and Clowning
  • Musical Performances and Teatro Canzone
  • Dance and Dance Theatre
  • Children’s Theatre
  • Multimedia and Visual Theatre

Independent artistic productions are offered various opportunities, recognitions, and avenues for professional development.

Mentions and/or awards may grant certain shows the chance to be hosted in the seasons, showcases, or festivals of national or international partners; or to receive financial reimbursements provided by partners/sponsors. These assignments will be made by partner artistic directors, a panel of industry professionals, audience votes, and the "Student Jury" project.

The Student Jury Project
Now in its third edition, the "Student Jury" project involves students from various Milanese schools—from middle schools to universities—with the aim of bringing them closer to theatre, art, and culture by developing their critical thinking and fostering awareness of the value of their opinions and judgments.
The evaluations made by these young jurors will serve as the basis for awarding the F.I.L. Prize, a cash scholarship designed to support the artistic work of a selected company.

Audience feedback is crucial for artists. Spectators can always share their evaluations by visiting the show’s dedicated page on our website.

The Fringe embraces a deeply inclusive approach, aiming to broaden access to theatre and the performing arts. To remain true to this mission—not just in words but in action—this year, the Festival, thanks to its partners and a number of initiatives, offers discounted admission to ensure that seniors, individuals with disabilities, low-income individuals, and their families also have the opportunity to attend performances.

WHAT IS A FRINGE FESTIVAL?

In 1947, eight theatre companies rejected by the Edinburgh International Festival decided to perform anyway, creating a festival of self-produced and self-financed shows. These shows operated independently from established institutions, without subsidies, and separate from any influences or constraints on styles, forms, cultures, and religions. The only thing the artists were dependent on was their audience. Thus “Fringe”the first independent theatre festival of its kind — was born.

Since the mid-1960s, other Festivals independently modelled after the original Edinburgh Fringe have emerged worldwide, such as the OFF Festival in Avignon, established in 1966. Today, Fringe and OFF Festivals remain vital to local theatre communities worldwide. There are now approximately 250 Fringe Festivals globally, and  Miano Off Fringe Festival is part of the World Fringe Association.
